4 Reasons Why May is Good for Kitesurfing

Do you need a little motivation to visit kite spots in May? Then have a look at 4 reasons why you should go kitesurfing in May:

No Wetsuits
Whether you go into the Caribbean, Asia, or even Europe, there will be no need to bring your wetsuits anymore! The reason is simple – May is the month of summer in pretty much the whole world! This means that the water starts to get warm, and you will no longer feel cold without the wetsuit!

Warm Water
From Europe to Asia, you can find plenty of kitesurfing destinations with warm water, which makes this month so good! Although you can find good conditions during February and March, these conditions become even better during May!
And besides warm water, the outside temperature also becomes more acceptable, which opens up a lot of different places around the world!

Summer is Fun
There is just something special about May as it signifies that the summer is now here for good. In a month like this, everyone wants to go out and have fun… And what would be more fun than going out to the sea and surfing on your kiteboard? Besides kitesurfing, you can also enjoy a host of other amazing water and wind sports to truly enjoy the arrival of summer!

Consistent Wind
What good would it be if you went out kitesurfing only to find no wind? In such a case, all one can do is enjoy the beaches, explore different places, or get a taste of the local culture. I am not saying all of these things are bad, but if you are going for kitesurfing, then you should be able to kitesurf!
That’s why when you go for kitesurfing during May, you get to enjoy consistent winds (12 knots to 35 knots) at a lot of different spots around the world.
And when you combine that with the summer vibes and all the people that go kitesurfing during May, it makes up for a truly great experience!

Best Kitesurfing Destinations to Visit in May

In Sri Lanka, we usually get strong winds from the beginning or middle of May, depending on the season. And since the world doesn’t end at our kitesurfing home spot in Kalpitiya, below is our recommendation of where to kitesurf in May.

Wondering where to kitesurfing in May? Then have a look at our best kitesurfing destinations for May:

1. Babaomby (Madagascar)

In Madagascar, a particular spot that has proven itself to kitesurfers around the world is the Babaomby. But what’s so special about Babomby? Take a quick look:

  • The wide sea lagoon offers a diverse and beautiful playground for kitesurfers.
  • Consistent and excellent wind conditions.
  • Crystal clear and shallow waters.
  • Multiple wave zones can help you surf for a long period of time.
  • White sandy beaches.
  • Great local culture and exotic foods!

In short, Babaomby from Madagascar has everything you need for kitesurfing in May!

The average wind speed from April till November is around 20 knots to 35 knots – So if you are going to Babomby for kitesurfing in May, then you can expect pretty much the same wind speed! And the fact which makes Babomby even more special is that the wind starts from 9 AM (morning) till the sunset! So for the whole day, you can be out in the sea with your kiteboards!

As for the water temperature, it is usually around 26 – 28°C during May, and the outside temperature is 30°C on average.

2. Dakhla (Morocco)

The 2nd best place to visit during May is Dakhla, located in the beautiful country of Morocco. This place is good that it was selected for hosting the WKC (upcoming) and has already hosted numerous VKWC world cups in the past! So just based on this fact alone, you can rest assured that Dakhla will offer you the best conditions for kitesurfing.

In the Dakhla, the length of the water lagoon is around 45 KM which means that this spot has the ability to host a lot of kitesurfers. In many kitesurfing spots, it is usually a problem that when too many kitesurfers go into the sea, it can get hectic and even difficult to avoid crashes. But with a lagoon as big as this, you will have plenty of freedom.

And throughout the year, the water temperature is acceptable, and especially during May, it is just perfect! On top of that, you get consistent winds throughout the day, and the people are friendly too!

In my opinion, this place is great for pretty much all surfers, from freestyle to even beginners, who are getting their feet wet with kitesurfing.

During May, the temperatures in Dakhla are around 22°C to 29°C, so there will be no need to bring your wetsuits. However, the temperature can drop during the night, and for this reason, it can be a good reason to bring your long pants and warm sweaters.

3. Paje (Tanzania)

Besides offering world-class conditions for kitesurfing, this spot is also regarded as the Pearl of Zanzibar! So other than kitesurfing, there are also a lot of other things to explore in the Paje, such as:

  • Beautiful and clean sandy beaches.
  • Turquoise water (blue color)
  • Relatively fewer tourists than in other famous spots.

Despite not being so popular among the general tourists, this place is indeed popular among the kitesurfers… So you can expect to find kitesurfers from all over the world! And we all know that it gets even more fun when multiple kitesurfers come together at the same place. That’s why you will notice that this place has more of a kitesurfing vibe than being an overpriced tourist spot!

In Paje, the 2nd season for kitesurfing starts from May till October – So if you go there in May, you will be joining the Kuzi season, which offers great conditions for water and wind sports. In the morning, the wind tends to be more calm. After lunchtime, it gets stronger. So, in a nutshell, you can get a taste of different winds in Paje too!

4. Paracas (Peru)

This spot is close to a national park as well, which adds to the appeal! So when you are done with kitesurfing or need a break, then you can also visit the national park! Furthermore, you will also find numerous restaurants and tourist shops in the area, which means you have a lot to do here!

The general perception about this place is that it is good for all levels of riders… So if you visit Paracas (Peru) during May, you will be able to enjoy shallow and relatively flat water closer to the beach. And if you want some more action, then there is also a nearby offshore spot that offers butter flat water!

 In a nutshell…

Without any doubt, the month of May is the peak season for tourists and those who love kitesurfing. That’s why we will recommend that you plan for your kitesurfing vacation during May ahead of time… This will allow you to find a suitable spot that ticks all the right boxes and to even find the right type of accommodation and flights.
In general, you may find that flights are a little expensive during May since it is the start of the summer season… However, let’s not forget that May is famous among kitesurfers for a lot of reasons, such as good winds, great air + water temperature, and the general holidays/vacation vibes!
Furthermore, pretty much all the spots around the world open up in May – This means that you can add even more kitesurfing spots to your list to visit during this month!
And if you are planning a kitesurfing vacation with the whole family, then once again, the month of May will not disappoint you! With pretty much everyone booking their vacations and going on holidays, you can also surprise your family with a trip to an exotic location. Once there, you can enjoy kitesurfing while the kids can enjoy other activities such as sightseeing, water sports, and even getting exposure to the local culture!
Last but not least, do not forget to have fun on your kitesurfing vacations during May… And do not forget to take pictures and videos so that you can look back and enjoy the fun times once again!
