Are you passionate about kitesurfing and waves? Do you want to know which are some of the top-ranked wave kite spots on the planet? Then you are in the right place! Unfortunately, in Sri Lanka, we don’t have many places to wave kitesurfing, apart from Arugam Bay. However, we have created a list that will help you to find some of the best wave kitesurfing destinations on the planet.

Kitesurfing is one of those sports which helps you to feel a range of different emotions, from adrenaline-boosted excitement to freedom to a sense of calm! From surfing on the clear and stable waters to riding the untamed waves and harsh winds, kitesurfing can be made into whatever you want it to be!

If you are a kitesurfer, you will know already that kitesurfing showcases a lot of innate traits such as balance, patience, and minimalism. And your favorite spots would be the lagoons and the top kite spots, which have good and consistent wind. After all, it is the wind and the water that enables one to even surf the waves – Without good waves and wind, there would be no kitesurfing at all!

So today, we will look at the best wave spots for kitesurfing all over the world – If you are a kitesurfing enthusiast or want to pick up this exciting sport, then you should choose one of the locations given below!

How to Choose the Best Kitesurf Wave Spots

Before we list the best kitesurf wave spots, let’s discuss what makes them the best in the first place! If we have to define a kitesurfing spot in two words, that would be the wind and waves.

A good kitesurfing spot must have consistent winds for hours on end. Another important quality is the strength of the wind – It must be strong enough so that you can ride the large power kites comfortably.

When we talk about wind, it must not be gusty but consistent and steady. Because gusty wind can hinder the riding experience, and you may even stop in the middle of the water with no wind!

So based on the wind factor, you should look for spots that are parallel to the beach or are toward the sea.

Now let’s discuss the 2nd factor which makes a kitesurfing spot good, and it’s the waves! A good spot must have groundswell-driven and long-distance waves. The period between the wave sets must be long as well to ensure a smooth and better riding experience.

An ideal wave should be around 1.5 – 2.0 m and must not be huge as it brings a whole set of new dangers with it. But if we put the wave size aside, it is the power, length, and regularity of the waves that matters the most.

Now that we understand what makes a kitesurf wave spot good let’s move on to the best kitesurf wave spots in the world!

Top Kitesurf Wave Spots in the World

Are you ready to kitesurf and enjoy the limitless freedom and adrenaline rush? Then you should not miss out on these spots:

1. Manawa / One Eye (Mauritius Island)

On Mauritius Island, one of the most well-known beaches is the Le Morne which is present in the southwest part of the Island.
And the name “One Eye” is used for the most famous wave of Mauritius Island. Based on the experience of many kitesurfers, this is one of the fastest and cleanest waves in the world!
And if we talk about the wind, it is also very reliable as you can find up to 300 wind days in a calendar year. As a kitesurfer, you can ride the waves between the reefs of One Eye and the Manawa. But if you are totally new to kitesurfing, then it is not recommended to check this place – Instead, you should go for a place that offers flatwater waves.

2. Pacasmayo (Peru)

The next wave spot on our list is Pacasmayo which is a small village located in Peru. If you are looking for consistent kitesurfing waves, then you can’t go wrong with the Pacasmayo, as the waves can easily cover a few hundred meters!

The wave at this spot is almost perfect with a very good formation and is not extra powerful as well – It is just a medium-sized wave and is powerful enough for the kitesurfers to go out there and ride the waves.

The best time to visit this place is between April – November, when the wind remains consistent and stable. On average, it is actually pretty common for the wind to reach 18 to 20 knots speed during mid-day.

And as the wind is usually side-off / side, it makes the wave smooth and clean. As for the offshore days, you can also go out if you are an experienced kitesurfer or there are some rescue boats around.

3. Oum Labouir (Morocco)

The next kitesurfing wave spot is Oum Labouir which also hosts the world championships for kitesurfing every year! You can find this spot on the Dakhla peninsula (ocean side), and it is close to Mauritania.

But what’s so good about this place? It offers steady, long, and high-quality waves. And another good part is that the waves are usually clean and very long, which allows the kitesurfers to travel a lot of distance smoothly.

On average, the waves can go up to 3 meters, and if you are a fan of it, then you can’t afford to miss this spot in Morocco.

The best time to visit this place is between April and September, during which you can find 1 to 2-meter waves!

4. Ponta Preta (Cape Verde)

This spot is located in Cape Verde and is near Santa Maria – It is rapidly growing as one of the most beautiful and fastest kitesurfing waves among the kitesurfers. And to top it all off, this is also the home to the world’s legendary wave rider “Mitty Monteiro”!

Since this spot is present on Sal Island’s west coast, the waves can go up to 6m from January to March. But once again, this place is not ideal for beginners as there are also rocks present – When these rocks are combined with powerful waves, it can get risky in case of any unsuccessful attempts of take-off!

But for the extra kitesurfers who love such waves, there is no place better than the Ponta Preta!

5. Caños de Meca (Spain)

For those who love to kitesurf around the Tarifa area, the wave spot to look out for is called Caños! You can find this spot between the lighthouse and the west side of Trafalgar point – It is about 40 km from Tarifa (north-west side) and can be easily found due to its popularity.

On average, the wind is actually slower than what you would find in Tarifa, but the quality of the wind as well as the waves is pretty consistent.

6. Mancora (Peru)

Mancora is another unique place to kite wave surfing. Practically every afternoon, especially between the months of April and December, the wind blows spectacularly from 15 to 30 knots, depending on the day.

The combination of wind and good waves makes Mancora one of the most fun places in Peru to kitesurf. But be careful if you’re just starting out! This destination is not very suitable for beginners!

If there is not enough wind in Mancora, just 40 minutes away, the coastal strip between Cabo Blanco and Lobitos offers several ideal places where the wind blows strongly every day.

Here are some of the best wave kitesurfing spots near Mancora:

* Los Organos

Just ten minutes south of Máncora you can find this perfect wave. Although you can surf here throughout the north swell season, it’s best when the sand breaks, between January and March.

* Capa Blanca

Just 25 minutes from Máncora, it is the most perfect wave in Peru. The best time to surf here is during the first big waves from the north, between the months of October and January. This is probably the best wave kitesurfing spot in the world.

* Panic spot

This is a wave of fast and tubular lefts that breaks with great swells from the south, especially between the months of May and November.

* Lobitos / El Hueco

A little further afield, 50 minutes south of Máncora, are these two impressive lefts. El Hueco is more radical and works very well between May and November. Lobitos has a nobler swell but in any case a perfect tube is formed between August and November.

*El golf

One hour to the south we find this beach break that is probably the best in Peru, in its day it offers perfect tubular peaks. You can kitesurf all year round.

Maui has fewer waves than Oahu but more winds so it is the perfect place to surf the waves with a kite.
