Kitesurfing conditions in Puttalam Lagoon

Puttalam is the most famous town in the district and has a huge lagoon, which is the main livelihood for many fishermen. Although there are no kite schools in Puttalam town, as there is no beach suitable for kiting, the Puttalam lagoon is a perfect place to organize kite and downwind trips to Kalpitiya or the surrounding islands.

There are few flatwater lagoons in the world as big as Puttalam. This lagoon is connected to the sea, causing the water level to vary depending on the tide, just as in the Kalpitiya lagoon. In the Puttalam lagoon, there are a few islands that are becoming well-known kite spots, such as Ippantivu Island.

The Sri Lankan government has launched a tourism plan to build hotels on many of these islands, but today they remain charming islands where there are only fishermen, making them quite unique kite spots.
