Kitesurfing in Arugam Bay

Kitesurfing in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is Famous for its awesome surfing conditions. Featuring a curved bay combined with tides and reefs that make it a surfers paradise, you will find 2-meter waves and a scenic coastline that perfectly demonstrate why it’s become one of the main surfing spots in Sri Lanka.

With the right conditions, it’s also possible to to kite among the big waves, but this is not a beginner’s spot and the wind isn’t as reliable as in spots like Kalpitiya!

Kitesurfing conditions in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is one of the most famous surfing destinations in South Asia. But honestly, if you’re coming to Sri Lanka to kite, Arugam Bay is not the best kitesurfing spot you will find. The wind is not as constant on the east as it is on the west coast, and you’re unlikely to find a kitesurfing school or hotel complex that will rent you the equipment. The wind in Arugam is side-off, it doesn’t blow daily, and there are no rescue boats, so good luck!

If you do have the opportunity to travel to Arugam Bay with your boardbag, we recommend you take your kite equipment with you… just in case! If you’re lucky enough to be there on a windy day, you can kite some truly dreamy waves. The best kitesurfing season in Eastern Sri Lanka (Arugam Bay) would also be in the summer months (May to September).
